Using children as the subject at a photo shoot can be unpredictable at best. When going into this type of situation, I know that I may want a specific shot, but I want to keep my options open. Children have a tendency to create their own moments.
It isn’t impossible to get great children’s photos, but it does take patience. I always give myself Local parks are the perfect environments for children’s pictures. Most kids enjoy their time outside playing and the playground is a great incentive to get the subjects to cooperate. I may set up in one place, but find that it is tough to keep their attention. Flexibility is a must when photographing children. Keep things moving and make the best of the time that you have. Kids will find it difficult to stay still for long amounts of time and will bore easily. When this happens, I change things to keep them interested. It doesn’t mean that I have to give up on the park photos, but I may need to move things to a different place.
Sometimes, kids just need a break. I want them to enjoy having their picture taken and want to come back. 5 minutes of letting them run around is better than just hurrying to get the right shot. Taking the time to rest gives everyone the chance to reset and start again. Some of your best photos are captured when they don’t think your looking. Kids will be kids and it is best to sit back and be patient. When you least expect it, they will generate the perfect shot. And creating some wall art portraits is always fun and the kids really love them when the see the finals from the photography sessions. Not to mention Mom
